The state’s 3800 rail level crossings will come under closer scrutiny in coming weeks as the NSW Police Force turns its attention to dangerous and illegal behaviour by motorists. Transport for NSW is funding the operation through the Level Crossing Improvement Program (LCIP), which includes building safety awareness around level crossings. Level crossings throughout the Hunter, Illawarra and north-west NSW will receive particular attention. Police operations focused on level crossings will begin next month and continue until June 2013. Electronic roadside billboards will also remind drivers of safety at level crossings during that period. “It is important motorists, cyclists and pedestrians take care and obey the road rules when using level crossings,” the spokesperson said.
