The Times’ Scott Harrison has another gem today about Irvine’s Lion Country Safari (seen above in 1974), which closed 30 years ago this week: When African beasts roamed Irvine In a sidebar about other closed Southland animal theme parks, we briefly meet Jack Dutton, a former Anaheim mayor who created Dutton’s Jungle Garden. The theme park and restaurant predated Disneyland, opening in 1952. The star of the park was Jerry, “The World’s Most Human Chimp.” (I must warn you that Jerry’s story is a shockingly sad one.) In September 1952 , The Times wrote about the Duttons’ creation of a jungle garden for their pet chimpanzee: Jerry, the Dutton’s [sic] 5-year-old African chimp, joined the family at the age of 2 and Dorothy Dutton accomplished the unusual by “humanizing” him.
