(Islamabad, Pakistan) On the first full day of our UPIC gathering here in Islamabad, interfaith delegates from the US and Pakistan dug deep into issues that divide our two countries. The exchanges were always respectful, but at times, the content left me gasping for air as I considered the distance between our societies and the pain that we have inflicted on one another. We all know the American side of the equation: the cost in lives, limbs and scarce financial resources that have been invested in the Global War on Terror. And we resent Pakistan for not being a mercurial ally at best, for harboring Osama bin Laden, for blasphemy laws used to persecute Christians and other religious minorities, for the atrocities against women as symbolized in the attempted murder of the young activist, Malala Yousafzai.
