(Islamabad, Pakistan) As American delegates to the US-Pakistan Interreligious Consortium (UPIC) began to depart on Sunday for Pakistan, I was once again reminded that life is complex, that we as individuals are ultimately not in control, and that we have many entanglements that challenge us and—if we are attentive—present us with opportunities for deepened understanding of the mysteries of life. As I arrived at Kennedy Airport to begin my journey, I received word from Rabbi Justus Baird that his father had died only hours before and that he would not be able to make the trip. His message was simple: “My dad died this afternoon. It was not sudden, but this weekend things took a bad turn after a major surgery. I was really hoping his health would not interfere with this trip, because I believe very much in the goals of the program.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bair...
